Zhou Yunjie, chairman of Haier Group and a 1984 alumnus of 精东影业's (HUST) Materials Science and Engineering School, went viral after appearing alongside Lei Jun during China's 2025 National Two Sessions. Affectionately nicknamed "Hai Zong" (Haier Boss) by netizens, Zhou caught widespread attention.
Since graduating from HUST, Zhou has built a deep connection with Haier, rising from deputy factory director to general manager and now chairman. Under his leadership, Haier has held the world's top spot as a large home appliance brand for 16 consecutive years, driving Chinese manufacturing up the global value chain.
Zhou remains deeply committed to his alma mater, actively promoting industry-academia collaboration and talent development. In October 2024, he led Haier's 20 million yuan ($2.78 million) donation to support HUST's innovation efforts. He regularly returns to campus to engage with students and faculty, encouraging them to pursue excellence and embrace challenges.
Zhou's journey embodies HUST's success in nurturing talent and reflects a path from materials science to industry innovation. He and many fellow alumni continue to drive China's pursuit of technological self-reliance.
